Discover 5 key ideas that you can incorporate to improve the teaching of History across Key Stages 1 and 2.
Think cross-curricular – why we should teach History in a cross-curricular way, linking History to learning in other subjects. For example, within history topics, how can you introduce learning of maths, science, ICT, vocabulary, grammar and spelling? How can topic keywords lists be made useful for children across the curriculum?
Teach local, teach recent - how you can “teach local” and “teach recent” across Key Stages 1 and 2, to provide children with a familiar context as a starting point to explore events of the past?
Use songs and videos - writing their own song lyrics for historical topics using tunes they know.
Teaching the skill – the importance of talk, collaboration and historical enquiry skills. How can children use skills to connect ideas, contrast ideas, analyse trends and ask valid questions? Why is it important to teach children better analysis, deduction and inference skills in history and not be too preoccupied with the content?
Check your politics – why we must be aware of our influence as teachers and that we are not perpetuating certain views or opinions.
