Morphemic Approaches

Morphology has been described as the way to narrow the gap for disadvantaged children. The word refers to the grammatical units within words - like suffixes and prefixes - which advantaged children can use, often unconsciously, to work out new words and meanings. We tend to teach children how morphemes work, for instance in spelling, but not what they mean. This resource suggests ways to teach morphemic knowledge explicitly, close that achievement gap, and above all have fun while doing it!

  • simple activity to play with morphemic units
  • use morphemic knowledge to become a 'word detective'
  • suggested progression in suffixes across the primary years
