A Guide to Teaching Maths at Key Stage 3 for the Non-Specialist

About this course

Although we will avoid going over familiar materials and resources, there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions to help develop our own confidence in teaching. 

This highly practical session will make sure that you come away with a clear understanding of effective ways to deliver maths, that help support learners’ knowledge and confidence. The course is suitable for non-specialists, but also for those who are looking at new ways to engage learners.

  • Understand and cope with the tricky bits of the National Curriculum for Maths at Key Stage 3
  • Explore the pedagogy of great maths teaching, to ensure students learn the concepts and essential underpinning skills to support learners towards GCSE/Functional Skills
  • Create successfully sequenced medium term plans and develop a maths audit to support embedding maths across the curriculum 
  • Support learners’ misconceptions and those who struggle with maths
  • Encourage communication and collaboration in maths
