Geography is an enjoyable subject for most primary school children, but Ofsted has raised concerns about the narrowing of coverage and the poor retention of knowledge. This engaging three-part series suggests ways that you can deepen your class’s geography beyond map skills and simple locational knowledge, towards a richer understanding of ‘place’ and ‘process’, and a more purposeful fieldwork provision.

About this course

This three-part programme supports primary practitioners to improve their teaching of geography. Each session is about two hours long but supports half a day of reflection and development.

Session 1 looks at what we choose to teach:

  • Creating a strong rationale to engage children in each bit of geography learning
  • Ensuring you have a rich progression in skills and knowledge
  • What should we include in the ‘perfect’ geography lesson?

Session 2 explores practical ideas for exciting geography, including:

  • Getting outdoors
  • Geographical enquiry
  • Building a sense of ‘story’

Session 3 explores how we teach geography, and how we establish and evidence impact:

  • Is there a ‘Greater Depth’ in geography, and how might we teach it?
  • Assessment approaches that don’t divert from the real substance of learning
  • Using technology and exploring ‘cultural capital’
